Celebrating Inclusion, Community, and Achievement at SIS

Theme of the Month: Inclusion

April was an inspiring and eventful month at Southampton Intermediate School, centered around our theme of inclusion in recognition of Autism Acceptance Month. Throughout the month, students and staff engaged in a variety of meaningful activities designed to foster understanding, empathy, and a strong sense of community. From classroom lessons to morning announcements and school-wide initiatives, inclusion was at the heart of everything we did.

Silent Disco:
One of the standout events of the month took place on April 24th, when SIS hosted a vibrant and memorable Silent Disco open to students of all grade levels. This event was designed to promote awareness of autism and highlight the importance of understanding sensory sensitivities, while ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants.
The SIS cafeteria was transformed into a dance space where students enjoyed music through headphones, creating a fun and sensory-friendly experience. Additional spaces, including the library and band rooms, offered a variety of engaging, sensory-conscious activities such as face painting, zen gardens, slime making, and hands-on building stations.
This incredible evening was truly a collaborative effort. The SES, SIS and Special Education PTOs worked together to organize and decorate interactive stations, while SIS student groups—including mentoring/leadership clubs and the multicultural club—hosted their own activity tables. Adding to the excitement, members of the high school varsity baseball team served as DJs, keeping the energy high throughout the night. The Silent Disco brought together students, families, and staff from across the district in a meaningful celebration of inclusion, acceptance, and community spirit.

Thank You Mrs. Gentile:
Also on April 24th, SIS held a heartfelt surprise assembly to honor a very special member of our school community. Students and staff came together to celebrate our longtime school secretary, Mrs. Gentile, who recently turned 75 years old. Mrs. Gentile has given so much to SIS over the years, supporting students, staff, and families with unwavering dedication and care. The celebration was a wonderful way to show our appreciation and recognize the positive impact she has had on our school community. Thank you, Mrs. Gentile, for all that you do!

Pie in the Face Fundraiser:
Earlier this month, on April 2nd, SIS hosted its second annual “Pie in the Face” fundraiser in support of local families. Students participated by donating money for the chance to toss a pie at a staff member, making for a fun and memorable event. We extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the staff members who volunteered and helped make this lighthearted fundraiser such a success.
Wear Blue Wednesdays:
Throughout April, our school community came together to recognize Autism Acceptance Month in a meaningful way. Each Wednesday was celebrated as “Wear Blue Wednesday,” promoting awareness, acceptance, and inclusion. Students and staff were encouraged to wear blue every Wednesday as a visible show of support for individuals with autism. It was inspiring to see our community unite in celebrating differences and reinforcing the importance of kindness, understanding, and inclusion for all.

Polar Bear Plunge:
In support of Autism Acceptance Month, many SIS students and staff participated in the Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge at Splish Splash on April 25th. We are proud to share that Southampton Schools earned the title of “Cool School Winners” by raising the most funds among participating districts—nearly $10,000 in total. We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to this incredible cause.

Field Trips:
Students also had the opportunity to participate in enriching field trips throughout the month. Our 7th and 8th graders visited the Southampton Playhouse, while 5th grade students explored the high school wet lab. Mrs. Oswald’s science classes visited the lab on April 27th, where students experienced firsthand the work being conducted and observed marine life up close. This engaging trip brought classroom learning to life, sparking curiosity and excitement for science. Special thanks to high school teachers Mr. Metzger and Mr. Tilken for helping make this valuable experience possible.

State Testing:
April marked the completion of our state testing season in science, ELA, and math. We are proud to report strong participation rates, with overall improvement compared to last year. We commend our students for their effort and perseverance, and thank our staff for their continued support and dedication.

Best Buddies Raffle:
Throughout April, Mrs. Giorlando sold raffle tickets in Room B209 to support Best Buddies. A variety of great prizes were available, including gift baskets and gift cards. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to participate and support this meaningful cause!

Candy Guessing Contest:
Beginning in April, students and staff visited the Main Office to take part in our blue candy guessing contest. For $1 per guess, participants estimated how many pieces of blue candy were in the jar, with many entering multiple times. The closest guess won the entire candy bowl. All proceeds supported the Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge. Congrats to our winners, Vincent Godoy and Michael Arreola, who tied for the closest guess and split the candy prize.

As we reflect on April, we are reminded of the strength of our SIS community. Through inclusion, collaboration, and shared experiences, we are striving to create an environment where every student feels valued and supported.

Thank you for being part of such a wonderful month at Southampton Intermediate School.
