Shinnecock Heritage Day: Ma's House
Dear SIS Families
Southampton Intermediate School will have an exciting opportunity to attend the exhibition, A Moment of Our Time — A Shinnecock Response to America 250, curated by local Shinnecock artist, Jeremy Dennis, at Ma’s House, located on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. The exhibition highlights living Shinnecock artists and their perspectives on the United States semi-quincentennial. Southampton Intermediate School students will visit Ma’s House to explore the exhibit and meet featured Shinnecock artists.
October 1st is Shinnecock Heritage Day, which honors the history, culture, and resilience of the Shinnecock Indian Nation. On October 1, 2010 the Shinnecock Nation received an official call from the Department of the Interior, acknowledging the Nation as the 565th federally recognized tribe. To honor this day and local history, each class visit will teach students why October 1st highlights and acknowledges the history of the Shinnecock Nation and their unique contributions to Southampton.
As a collective SIS family, we look forward to bringing each class to Ma’s House on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation to explore, engage, and learn about the Shinnecock Nation through art and history the week of September 28th-October 2nd.

Schedule of attendance
The space can accommodate between 30-40 at a time so grades will travel in 2 groups throughout the week.

Students will ride school busses with SIS Admin and staff to the site and back. While at the site students will have an opportunity to tour the exhibit and hear from presenters.

If your child is unable to attend the trip and you would like for them to stay behind in school-- please fill out the OPT OUT Form included. ONLY complete the opt out form if you want your child to remain in school and not attend the exhibit
